How to Select the Right Air Compressor for Your Tools

Air Compressor Sizing Guide

Choosing the wrong air compressor usually comes down to one mistake: not calculating your total air demand correctly. Whether you are running a service truck, a manufacturing plant, or a home garage, selecting the right unit starts with the numbers.

Don’t guess. Calculate.

Knowing the following information will guide you to the right Air Compressor:

CFM – Cubic Feet Per Minute

Add the CFM of every tool running at the same time.

Add 25-30% to account for leaks and future tools.

This is your Peak Demand number.

PSI (Force) – Pounds/Square Inch

90 PSI runs 90% of pneumatic tools.

Check if you need high-pressure (150+ PSI).

Match or slightly exceed your highest tool requirement.

Voltage – Power Supply

Standard outlets. Good for up to 2HP. Home garages.

Dedicated circuit. Required for 5HP+. Industrial shops.

Diesel/Gas. Zero power lines. Construction sites.

Storage (Tank)

Small (1-30): Intermittent use. Quick recovery not required.

Medium (30-80): Balanced for general automotive and fabrication

Large (80+): Prevents short-cycling in high-volume applications.

Duty Cycle

Intermittent (50-75%): The compressor needs a break. Fine for task work.

Continuous (100%): Runs indefinitely. Required for production.

Consequence: Ignoring this = Overheating and failure.

Stationary vs. Portable

Mobility

Portable: Skid mounts, tow-behinds, or small vertical tanks with wheels. For the job site hopper.

Stationary: Bolted to the floor. Piped into the building. For the dedicated plant.

What happens if you ignore these steps

If you underestimate your CFM, your tools will starve for air. Pressure will drop, tools won’t fire, and the compressor will run constantly (causing heat damage).

If you overestimate your PSI, you waste energy. Compressing air to 175 PSI when you only need 90 PSI is expensive.
